Abstract
This chapter focuses on introducing the population dynamics of the urbanization process, compared to the urban land dynamics that were reviewed in Chap. 3. After evaluating population changes at both country and city levels in Sects. 4.1 and 4.2, it assesses urban population changes compared to urban land use changes, revealing that, in contrast to western countries, urban population grew at a faster pace than land use change, leading to the increase in population density in most SENA cities outlined in Sect. 4.3. The chapter concludes in Sect. 4.4 with a look at two of the emerging types of communities in SENA urban landscapes—gated communities and informal settlements.
This city is what it is because our citizens are what they are.
