Abstract
This chapter explores the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Common terminology, definitions and the differing types of FGM are considered, together with the identification of countries where it is practiced and its global prevalence. A historical overview, legislation and policy related to the practice are offered to help contextualise the problem of FGM. Following this, the physical, psychological/emotional and social and economic impact of FGM on those exposed to the practice and their families and communities is discussed. Risk and protective factors are identified, and finally the implications for policy, practice and research are considered.
