The Use of Technology in English Medium Education

Part of the book series: English Language Education ((ELED,volume 27))

Abstract

The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has completely transformed the traditional teaching of universities from face-to-face into online mode. Unexpectedly, this measure has lasted for more than 1 year and, despite the initial chaos, the prolonged impact of pandemic affirms that teachers’ awareness of virtual classroom operation has inevitably increased. With such acknowledgment, this research invited two experienced ESP lecturers (n = 2) teaching at an English-medium university in Hong Kong, to share their perceptions toward online teaching. Based on their reflections in the interviews, this chapter delineates the pros and cons of classroom interaction through video conferencing software. In comparison with forward and backward recall, the study reflects on the pedagogical implications on online teaching and how teachers prepare themselves to promote students’ engagement in response to future upheavals in education.
