The Assessment and Treatment of Stereotypy in the Sleep Context

Clinical Handbook of Behavioral Sleep Treatment in Children on the Autism Spectrum

Abstract

Restricted and repetitive behaviors, known as stereotypy, are a core diagnostic feature of autism and are commonly associated with sleep problems. Stereotypy includes repetitive motor (e.g., body-rocking) and vocal behaviors (e.g., nonword sounds), as well as repetitive manipulation of objects (e.g., mouthing an object). Research has predominantly focused on how poor sleep affects stereotypy. In comparison, very little is known about the ways in which stereotypy impacts sleep, including how sleep-interfering stereotypy may be assessed and treated within the sleep context. This chapter focuses on understanding sleep-related stereotypy in children on the autism spectrum, including the underlying functions of the behavior, and the bidirectional relationship between stereotypy and sleep disturbance. This chapter discusses how functional behavior assessment may be used to assess and then inform treatment for sleep-interfering stereotypy and provides an overview of extant research, including a discussion of the available treatments for daytime stereotypy and the potential application of such treatments to the sleep context. A case example is provided to illustrate how sleep-interfering stereotypy may be assessed and treated for a child on the autism spectrum.
