Abstract

This chapter examines the role of the Bahamas’ government in tourism. The tourism industry is a very important tool for development of the economy in the Bahamas and for increasing the quality of life of residents. The role of the Bahamas government in tourism has been, is now, and will continue to be extensive and significant. Economically, tourism generates thousands of dollars in tax revenues and thousands of jobs. In an attempt to provide an overall view of the important role that the Bahamas government plays in tourism, the chapter examines three components: (1) government legislation in tourism development, (2) government policy in tourism development, and (3) government programs in tourism development. Data on the Bahamas and tourism were collected from several government Ministries in the Bahamas.
