Exposure to Violence and the Link with Asthma

Abstract

Asthma and exposure to violence (ETV) are major public health problems. ETV may influence asthma pathogenesis and contribute to health disparities in asthma. In this chapter, we review published studies of ETV and asthma across life stages, discuss potential pathways underlying an ETV-asthma link, and recommend future directions for research in this field. Despite limitations of observational studies, the available evidence suggests a causal association between certain types of ETV (child maltreatment, maternal IPV, and exposure to community violence) and asthma or morbidity from asthma, though there is a paucity of experimental and prospective studies. Future prospective studies should assess causal pathways, adequately characterize asthma, and account for potential effect modifiers. In parallel, animal models should examine potential mechanisms for any effects of violence-related distress on experimental asthma. Determining whether and how specific types of ETV cause or worsen asthma should have major implications for disease management and health policy.
