Abstract

Decreased visualization from excessive bleeding has been shown to increase the risk of surgical complications leading to poor surgical outcomes (Timperley et al., Otolaryngol Clin North Am 43:699–730, 2010). A number of pre-operative strategies can be employed to optimize the surgical field and in doing so improve the outcome of endoscopic sinus surgery. This chapter reviews a number of these strategies including the management of co-morbidities, use of pre-operative medications, patient positioning, local anesthesia application, anesthetic selection, and airway choices.
