Social Network Conversations with Young Authors of Online Hate Speech Against Migrants

  • First Online:
Cyberhate in the Context of Migrations

Part of the book series: Postdisciplinary Studies in Discourse ((PSDS))

Abstract

This chapter develops theoretical reflections emanating from online discussions between the author and young people aged 14–21, who were contacted because of their involvement in online hate speech held in Italian language and directed against migrants arriving in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea. Usually, these youths are not formally associated with hate groups and insist that their hate utterances should not be taken seriously. The study identifies features of the social network ecosystem that facilitate the propagation of xenophobic hatred. The main thesis, based on the notion of de-responsibilisation, is “the return of race in the absence of credence”, made possible by social acceptance of hate and the normalisation of hate speech.
