Abstract
This chapter explores the importance of education in enhancing inclusive and transformative urban development. Education is one of the most important drivers for development that promotes inclusive and transformative urban development through creating growth, positive change, or the addition of physical, economic, environmental, social, and demographic components. Inclusive and transformative urban development should be sustainable, evidenced by the quality of life of citizens through creating or expanding income and employment opportunities while maintaining the resources of the environment. This kind of urban development should as well be visible and useful, including an aspect of quality of change and the establishment of conditions for continuation of that change. Conversely inclusive and transformative urban development cannot exist where there is continual existence of educational inequalities.
“Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family. It is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.” Kofi Annan
