Definitions

Epidemiology: The term epidemiology has been used as the study of determinants, distribution, and occurrence of incidences related to diseases in a specific population group (Brachman 2011) which encompasses both infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Epidemiological trends: This can refer to various aspects of epidemiology, but in this review this term will only be confined to secular trends of epidemiology which indicates the occurrence of diseases over a period of time, usually years; seasonal trends indicating disease incidence shift due to environmental changes and epidemic trends (Brachman 2011).

Communicable or infectious diseases (CDs): These are diseases that are contagious, spreading via human contact (touch, fecal, oral, food, sexual activity, etc.), water, air, insect bites, animal contact, sexual activities, etc.
