Definition
Urban food gardens like community gardens, home gardens, and allotments are a form of urban agriculture that describes spaces in towns and cities where plants for human consumption are grown with a main purpose other than economic profit. Thus, urban food gardens are noncommercial forms of urban agriculture (Hou, 2020). While some urban food gardens may sell their produce, it is only a complementary function in addition to recreation, socializing, exercise, and growing plants for self-consumption. Legislation on sale of edible products from urban food gardens varies from one country to another, and one city to another (Pires, 2011). Urban food gardeners grow plants to be used for consumption, medical purposes, and aesthetics. They also participate in other gardening activities such as composting, weeding, and harvesting.
