Abstract
In the summer of 1929, Dorothy Andersen started work as an assistant in pathology at Presbyterian Hospital in CUMC; she would be linked to Columbia University’s Department of Pathology for the rest of her life.

The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Columbia University eventually merged with the Department of Pathology (to form the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology) in the late 1980s, affirming some of the common aims of anatomists and pathologists.

In 1911 Wollstein wrote about the emerging utility of lumbar punctures: “The extension of the practice of employing lumbar puncture as an aid to the diagnosis of meningitis has had, as one effect, the establishment of the important fact that the influenza bacillus [i.e., Hemophilus influenzae] is a not infrequent cause of seropurulent meningitis.”
