Abstract

On April 19, 1949, Rustin McIntosh submitted his resignation as Reuben Carpentier professor and Chair of Pediatrics at Columbia University to Columbia University President Dwight D. Eisenhower: Dorothy Andersen was at the center of the related controversy.

    It is worth noting that 1949 dollars are equivalent to about ten times that amount 70 years later.

    Andersen’s CUMC Archive files include very few examples of routine correspondence.

    McIntosh was on sabbatical during much of 1940, and the annual report of the Department of Pediatrics to the Dean of Medicine that year was made by Ashley Weech, who noted both Andersen’s 1938 study and the 1939 award. McIntosh’s earlier reports to the Dean made only vague mention of Andersen’s activities (perhaps because her primary allegiance was then still to the Department of Pathology).
