Abstract

Multisensory integration of the different sensory inputs is a fundamental requirement for body perception as well as for coordinated purposeful functional actions. Many paediatric neurological pathologies correlated with disturbed psychomotor development show impairment in multimodal information processing. This deficit is particularly relevant in cerebral palsy (CP) where the children often do not correctly decode sensory inputs because of their motor impairment and/or primary damage to specific sensory pathways.

This chapter presents a brief overview of the principle sensory modalities that contribute to the formation of the body schema and to the individual’s interpretation of their peri-personal space. The text is then focused on certain specific sensorial areas concerning (1) the different information provided by dynamic vs. passive touch, (2) the role of vision and its relationship with proprioception, (3) the influence of the vestibular system (currently little considered in CP), (4) the emerging use of vibration to influence the muscle tone and (5) the management of pain through careful manipulation.

The fundamental concept of multisensory integration as a cornerstone for motor control is discussed, as well as the way the various parts of the body use more than one sensory modality.

The sensory integration therapy proposed by Jean Ayres and further developed by Winnie Dunn is presented, with considerations of its importance in CP rehabilitation.
