Abstract

PMD can cause severe vision deterioration and rigid contact lenses can fail in the most severe cases. Surgery is usually the last choice of treatment. A great number of surgical procedures have been tried, among them we can mention crescent resection, crescent lamellar resection, central lamellar keratoplasty, penetrating keratoplasty, and epikeratoplasty. Studies have been published, recently, on the use of intrastromal corneal rings in PMD. These studies have shown good results both in improving the tomographic standard and visual acuity. The study revealed that short arc segments of 140-ICRS are a good choice for these cases, since they showed improvement in visual acuity in most patients, a significant reduction in astigmatism and little changes in asphericity and keratometry.
