Abstract
After finalization of 3GPP Release 13, start of massive NB-IoT deployment was delayed by some network hardware issues and uncertainties regarding migration of NB-IoT into 5G standard. On top of this, NB-IoT was suffering from competitive offers by non-cellular LPWAN technologies Sigfox and LoRa. According to market research company ABI Research, in the early days most IoT activity took place in the APAC region which accounted for 40% of all global LPWAN connections in 2018 and for nearly 97% of all NB-IoT connections worldwide. In particular, China has been a critical market for the early adoption and growth of LoRa and NB-IoT.
