Abstract
Noninvasive Ventilation (NIV) is ventilatory support that is provided without the use of an invasive airway such as an endotracheal tube or a tracheostomy tube. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is included in the discussion of NIV though it does not provide any ventilatory assistance. NIV can be provided using positive pressure (NIPPV) through an interface that increases the proximal airway pressure whereas negative pressure NIV (NPV) is provided by creating a negative pressure around the chest wall. Non-invasive ventilatory support has emerged as an important treatment modality for acute and chronic respiratory failure. Successful implementation of NIV is related to patient selection and optimal application of the devices and interfaces. Benefit of NIV includes the reduction of invasive ventilation and decreased hospital costs.
