Abstract
Auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) is the only method to habilitate hearing in children with certain severe inner ear malformations (IEM). In this chapter definite and possible ABI indications in children are highlighted. This is one of the medical interventions where teamwork is extremely important; in pediatric ABI intervention it is necessary to have good collaboration between otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and audiology. Surgical anatomy and landmarks are described in detail. Retrosigmoid approach is the most common route in children and this is described in detail. The advantages and disadvantages of all three approaches are provided. Intraoperative monitoring is crucial to determine the best position of ABI electrode. Complications related to this approach are provided.
