Abstract

This chapter aims at assessing the relation between racism and self-efficacy beliefs among black youth in Rio de Janeiro, as well as to compare the level of academic self-efficacy in black youth with that of non-black youth in the same city. The sample consisted of 172 young students (M = 21.96; SD = 3.57) from high school, technical, EJA, and preparatory courses, who answered 3 instruments: a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Perceived General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale for High School. Descriptive analyses, Spearman correlation between variables, and Student’s t-test were performed. The variables racism and self-efficacy showed a low positive correlation. In addition, black youth had lower academic self-efficacy scores than non-black youth. Although it is not possible to attest to the causality between the variables, such results suggest the possibility that racial issues influence self-beliefs of academic self-efficacy of young black people.
