Flora and Vegetation of the Pantanal Wetland

Abstract

This chapter presents a survey of species of lichenized Ascomycota from the Pantanal compiling published data and adding new information. The first records of lichenized fungi from the Pantanal were made by Malme between 1892 and 1894, visiting Corumbá and surroundings. After that, a long time passed before Kalb, Marcelli, Riquelme, Fleig, and Honda published further records. Additional new samples were obtained mainly in 2010, along the Paraguay River and adjacent corixos (streams that usually flow only during the flood period). We identified 72 taxa of lichenized fungi from the Pantanal in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, represented by 30 genera and 18 families. The most diverse groups are microlichens, with taxa distributed in different families. Foliose Caliciaceae and Physciaceae with 21 taxa, followed by Parmeliaceae with 18 and Collemataceae with 9, are the most representative families. Furthermore, we report Opegrapha rissoensis Redinger as a new records for Brazil, four new genus recorded for Mato Grosso do Sul state, viz. Agonimia Zahlbr., Crypthonia Frisch & G. Thor, Marcelaria Aptroot, M.P. Nelsen & Parnmen, and Neoprotoparmelia Garima Singh, Lumbsch & I. Schmitt, and 12 new species reports for the state. After an extensive bibliographic survey, we found 119 taxa already cited for the Pantanal. These previous data combined with the newly registered species add up to 165 taxa. Thus, in total, 46 new taxa are added to the list of lichenized fungi known from the Pantanal. Identification keys to the collected species, as well as brief descriptions, comments, and chemical information are presented. The new combination Fellhanera vulgata (Basionym Bacidia vulgata) is proposed and the replacement name Porina cryptostomoides is introduced for P. cryptostoma Malme nom .illeg. (non Mont.).
