Abstract

In the modern world today, science is one of the most critical subjects that is being taught in every schools. However, due to the secularisation of science, the inclusion of spirituality is often neglected. Thus, religion or spirituality has no influence in the modern secularised science education curriculum. For a Muslim educationist, it is necessary to develop the spiritual knowledge rooted from its main source, the Quran in teaching science. This chapter will discuss the epistemology of spiritual knowledge in Science Education whilst looking at the important developments in the Bruneian science education curriculum, especially regarding the introduction of selected verses of the Quran into the lower secondary science textbooks. This chapter will examine the rationale given to this new initiative with a specific reference to the Year 7 Lower Secondary Science Textbook in the light of the theory that the Quran has an epistemological role to play in science education. This also argues that it is necessary for Muslim science teachers to develop a holistic approach towards science education by integrating spiritual knowledges contained in the Quran with the science itself.
