Abstract
This chapter sets the macroacquisition of Chinese within the broader context of the world’s language situation. It begins by describing the global language system and how macroacquisition operates within it. It then provides some essential background to the book’s arguments and presents its key questions. It concludes with a brief overview of each chapter’s main content and contribution to addressing the key questions.
