Abstract

The impact on the consumption of energy destined for public lighting generates a high index cost. Even more, there are significant financial impacts by street lamps that do not have a very high useful life. Therefore, high amounts of electrical energy are needed to keep the streets lit up. New technologies for this concept in order can allow a significant economy in public lighting networks. The LED lamps have a longer useful life and also lower electrical energy consumption and a better luminance. The replacement of conventional lamps for LEDs can save a lot for the city, and the money saved in public lighting can be used in health and education. This article describes a case study in Sumaré, a small Brazilian city, where a simulation is performed to replace the public lighting systems. The financial impact of replacing the entire conventional lighting system with a lighting system with LED luminaires is studied and discussed. The simulation shows the return on investment in replacing a conventional system with a more modern one and its energy consumption over time.
