Race, Class, Gender, and Immigrant Identities in Education

Abstract

This chapter addresses the role of gender and race in the U.S. and its impact on Ethiopian immigrants’ identity development. In the U.S., Ethiopian immigrants must acclimate themselves to racial and ethnic relations and new gender roles. By providing a background on feminism in the U.S., the chapter explores gender equity from the perspective of Ethiopian immigrants. The chapter further explains the experiences of Ethiopian immigrant women in regards to race, class, gender, and identity in schools and beyond.
