Case-Based Device Therapy for Heart Failure

Abstract

The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a life-saving therapy in patients at risk for sudden cardiac death, but the traditional transvenous lead system comes with risks and complications related to intravascular and intracardiac placement of the leads. The subcutaneous ICD (SICD) is an effective alternative option in select patients at risk for intravascular device complications. The goal of this chapter is to discuss indications, implantation techniques and testing of the S-ICD.
