Handbook of Substance Misuse and Addictions

Abstract

Societies worldwide have been afflicted by substance misuse and addiction since ancient times. The nature of substance misuse and addiction has been investigated for several centuries. Yet, historically, research in this field has been hindered by social stigma, the prevailing scientific hypotheses and the technology available at any given time. The cellular responses to drugs could not be investigated until expenditure on such research was deemed “acceptable” and tools were developed to study complex biochemical pathways. Such technology has only been available for the past 40 years. Thus, the knowledge and awareness of substance misuse and addictions has developed in recent years. Nevertheless, it is challenging even for well-established researchers to keep abreast of research related to substance misuse and addictions. To assist colleagues who are interested in understanding more about substance misuse and addictions we have therefore compiled the resources recommended by active practitioners and researchers to produce tables of important and useful information. These tables provide relevant books and links to websites identifying regulatory bodies, societies, other organizations, and other sources of information.
