Abstract

In today’s global marketplace, diversification of customer requirements challenges the conventional manufacturing and production mode to be flexible to deal with increasing product complexity and variety, quality demands, and competitive pressure. Especially in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, there is more fierce competition and customized requirement. Punctual delivery is a very important Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for a company. A physical arrangement of machines and workstations within a space can allow for the minimization of movement of personnel and materials, thereby further reduction of production costs. Facility layout optimization and redesign help to improve manufacturing performance based on frequently updated manufacturing processes and settings. This chapter aims to investigate performance of an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based heuristic method for facility layout optimization, with discrete event simulation-based approach integrated for result validation. A practical use case is presented as the example; the illustrative case demonstrates that the proposed approach can achieve the goal of improving facility layout design.
