Abstract
There are many approaches to developing a mentoring program. Often the phases include nomination, evaluation, acceptance, training, and surveys (Alonso, Castaño, Calles & Sánchez-Herrero, 2010; Beltman & Schaeben, 2012; Black, Terry, & Buhler, 2016; Hall & Jaugietis, 2011; Holland, Major, & Orvis, 2012; Tennenbaum et al., 2014; Zerallos & Washburn, 2014; Spaulding, et al., 2020). Our program uses similar phases, and in this chapter, we describe the process while providing the rationale for each step. This should enable others to understand the process better and provide the foundation for any desired modifications. Within the training phase, engagement lays a foundation of enthusiasm for the training, which results in buy-in from the new mentors and impacts the first-semester freshmen’s interest.
