Abstract
The shipping sector is naturally ever-changing and is featured by developments and growth. As the sector is transitioning digitally, seafarers and other maritime personnel are left with no choice but to adapt, and this can be achieved through enhancing their knowledge and skills. Curriculum design and development process is influenced by various factors which determine the final curriculum. In the twenty-first century, curriculum development and design is characterized by technological integration and innovation. Therefore, it is vital for maritime education and training institutions (METIs) and curriculum developers to design and develop resilient curriculum and carefully follow the curriculum presage which guides the development and selection of appropriate individuals to be involved in the process. As it stands, response to emerging technologies differs from country to country and may be a burden to underdeveloped and developing countries with less capabilities. Conversely, technological advancements may present great opportunities for developed countries with higher education rate and technological capabilities. Nonetheless, it is undeniable that technological advancements bring about positive change and make the transfer of knowledge simple and convenient for the generations Y, Z and Alpha. The aim of this paper is to examine and assess underlying challenges of curriculum in the twenty-first century in various countries. Moreover, the researcher looks at curriculum presage, model of curriculum development, as well as its implementation in order to understand the rationale behind successful and failing curriculum. Additionally, measures by government to respond to technological advancements in education and development of curriculum will be assessed.
