Abstract

In the elderly population, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is the golden standard for several elective surgeries. An increasing number of publications show that MIS can also be applied in acute care surgery. In acute cholecystitis, acute appendicitis, perforated peptic ulcer, and other emergency situations laparoscopic approach on elderly patients are recommended by many surgical societies as first-line therapy. Limiting factors for not utilizing laparoscopic procedures are not correlated with age but more related to the patients’ comorbidities. Further studies on acute surgical procedures are needed to extend the indication for performing acute surgery using minimally invasive techniques.
