Abstract
In May 1985, following discussions by the European members of the ESA-NASA Primitive Bodies Science Study Group, a Comet Nucleus Sample Return mission was recommended by the ESA Solar System Working Group as a Planetary Cornerstone mission for the Horizon 2000 long-term science program (see Chapter 3).

Notes
- 1.
Champollion survived for a while in another iteration, as part of a comet lander/sample return technology demonstration associated with NASA’s Deep Space 4 mission. A drill on the lander was to obtain a sample which would be taken to the spacecraft, where it would either be analyzed or returned to Earth. In 1999 the mission was canceled.
- 2.
The name ‘Roland’ was dropped because the eponymous Frankish hero wasn’t favored by the German-led lander team.
- 3.
SCAPE stands for Self-Contained Atmosphere Protective Equipment.
