Abstract
Pain in the trigeminal nerve distribution can be caused by multiple etiologies. There are many pharmacologic options for treating pain, and each should be evaluated for appropriateness in a patient, taking into account the evidence for success, side effect profile, dosing schedule, and availability. While these medications have been primarily studied in classic trigeminal neuralgia, they are also used for medical management of symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia if surgical intervention is not indicated or as an intervention to avoid surgery. Other etiologies, such as painful trigeminal neuropathy, burning mouth syndrome, and postherpetic neuralgia may also respond to these medications.
