Chapter Overview and Statement of Objectives

This chapter considers qualities of sustainable community mental health resourcing from an ecological and interdisciplinary perspective. We identify and examine pertinent issues related to professional and legal definitions that underlie community mental health practices, emphasizing wellness perspectives. Next, we briefly discuss the history of related research and practices in community mental health, including the evolution of preventive mental health practices and the resources for them. We then discuss the qualities that define sustainable community mental health resourcing as they relate to access, reach, scalability, affordability, feasibility, and integrated care. In doing so, we map and explore the pillars of sustainable community mental health in the twenty-first century, taking into account diversity in community mental health resourcing needs. Finally, we propose lines of community mental health research and practice that are needed to support sustainable community mental health resourcing.
