Global Cleft Care in Low-Resource Settings

Abstract

Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common craniofacial anomalies and, if left untreated, cause feeding, speech, and development problems. Significant disparities in access to timely and appropriate care still exist. Lack of facilities and technical resources together with untrained anesthesia providers mitigates against safe surgery. Anesthesia for cleft patients might be associated with several complications which may be life-threatening if not recognized and managed properly. Children who are cared for by multidisciplinary teams have improved long-term outcomes with improved feeding, speech, and esthetics. In this chapter, the authors provide a comprehensive description of the anesthesia management of patients with cleft deformities, the main associated medical conditions, and its anesthesia implications.
