Abstract
The high geodiversity in Iran, mainly in desert areas, and also plenty of geoheritage sites increased the potential for development of geotourism and geoparks in desert areas of Iran. Some of these regions, including Maranjab are located in the vicinity of Tehran. This near distance increases the capability for geotourism development and geopark establishment. There are many other destinations in desert regions which have high capability for development of geotourism and geopark. Tabas area in the east Tehran, Khour, and Kala or Jandagh-Khour area, Fahraj-Bam area in the south Kerman Province, Minab-Jask in coastal area of south, Chabahar in southeast, Lut Desert world heritage, and Varzaneh in the middle part of Iran (in vicinity of Isfahan) has high potential to consider for geotourism planning. Dossiers for some of these areas are prepared for nomination in the UNESCO global geopark network and will be submitted to the UNESCO in the futures.
