Abstract

This is a primitive genus in the orchid family. Flowers have not developed a distinctive lip, but they possess a column which is a character of orchids. Individual sepals and petals resemble one another, like those of lilies, and narrow, lanceolate, spreading and sometimes recurved. The primitive column is erect or curved and carries 2 - 3 stamens. Bees pollinate the flowers (Ridley 1894; Pearce and Cribb 2002).
