Fibrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from fibroblasts and can develop in the soft tissues as well as in the bones (bone fibrosarcoma and ameloblastic fibrosarcoma are not covered in this book).

There are five soft tissue fibrosarcoma subtypes (→ see dedicated sections):

  1. 1.

    Infantile fibrosarcoma (IFS)

  2. 2.

    Adult fibrosarcoma (AFS)

  3. 3.

    Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)

  4. 4.

    Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS)

  5. 5.

    Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF)

Many cases previously designated as soft tissue fibrosarcomas are now classified otherwise, such as dedifferentiated liposarcoma, fibromatosis, fibrosarcomatous DFSP, low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST), synovial sarcoma, or undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) (→ see sections dedicated to each tumor).
