Abstract
The provision of physical resources, their interconnection by the internet and the creation of data as well as its exchange and transferring via corresponding virtual communication, increases complexity. The increase of complexity based on the growing data structure, various functionalities of digital technologies and diversity of the range of work designate the challenges in industrial maintenance. Based on a complex data structures and its virtual use—or otherwise: because of the complex data situation—there are optimal conditions given for the application of innovative technologies within industrial companies. In this context, digital technologies provide one or several functionalities (e.g. “virtuality” or “assistance”) and for those functionalities certain technologies are typical (e.g. Digital Twins or assistance systems, such as tablets or data glasses). At the same time, the implementation of these technologies includes consequences for human labor (e.g. in industrial maintenance). For this reason, the two modes of functionalities mentioned are discussed, using the example of the so-called “Digital Twin” and its combination with assistance systems in industrial maintenance.

Notes
- 1.
In the context of this article, ambivalence of consequences means that some consequences are not always clearly conflictual or beneficial and identifiable. They are often contradictory and occur in some maintenance cases simultaneously and in other cases not at the same time (see Sect. 3.3).
- 2.
According to NASA, “A Digital Twin is an integrated multi-physics, multi-scale, probabilistic simulation […] that uses the best available physical models, sensor updates […], to mirror the life of its flying twin.[…] In addition, […] the digital twin integrates sensor data from the vehicle’s […] system.” [46].

Lager [31] describes tayloristic employment as: “rigid, very finely structured division of work into many small, individual steps, social isolation of the employees.” Furthermore, central elements of tayloristic structured organization are: standardization of operational labor, formalized and centralized as well as pronounced hierarchical structures.
