Abstract

Tumor-like soft tissue lesions belong to a large and heterogeneous group of disorders, varying from normal anatomic variants, inflammatory and infectious lesions, soft tissue trauma, foreign body reactions, skin lesions, metabolic disorders, nonneoplastic vascular lesions, amyloidosis, and miscellaneous disorders. While many of these lesions are self-limiting without the need for further investigation or treatment, some have a rapid life-threatening course. The imaging approach is often very similar to the approach of real or neoplastic soft tissue tumors.

Knowledge of the normal anatomy and often specific location of these diseases, in combination with the relevant clinical history and potential skin changes, enable the correct diagnosis in most cases, thereby limiting the need for invasive procedures. However, biopsy should be performed in indeterminate cases.
