Nephrology in Argentina

Abstract

This chapter presents a general description of nephrology in Argentina, covering historical aspects, main renal diseases, and renal replacement therapy, which includes hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. We present facts from our history, which have had an enormous impact on the training of doctors, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome and the new therapeutic options under development in the country. In spite of the economic difficulties derived from repeated crises in the last decades, Argentina continues offering the possibility of universal care, including chronic kidney disease, to all persons who immigrate into the country, having hosted and taken care of more than 5000 dialysis patients from neighboring countries in the last 10 years.
