Part of the book series: Respiratory Medicine ((RM))

Abstract

Plastic bronchitis is a rare disease characterized by the presence or expectoration of branching airway casts, usually in children (Rubin. Clin Chest Med. 37:405–408, 2016; Madsen et al. Paediatr Respir Rev. 6:292–300, 2005). Although initial treatment of plastic bronchitis typically uses medical therapies meant to facilitate cast expectoration, removal of airway casts often requires bronchoscopy. The size and consistency of these casts can provide unique challenges to clinicians attempting to remove them, especially when using smaller pediatric bronchoscopes and instruments. This chapter provides an overview of disease classifications, diagnostic techniques, and treatment options for plastic bronchitis.
