Urologic Disease in the Aging Male: A Look Across the Lifespan

Abstract

Men’s health centers create portals of entry into healthcare systems. This chapter uses Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data and the American Urological Association Men’s Health Checklist to structure an overview for addressing male health concerns from adolescence and young adulthood through old age. Center leaders and care providers should be aware and knowledgeable about conditions across the range of ages, from disorders of sexual differentiation and other congenital disorders to fertility concerns in cancer survivors and a large number of prevalent urological diseases. A matrix of services must be available for downstream referral and escalation of care for conditions such as testis cancer, undiagnosed diabetes, and many comorbid conditions associated with urological diseases such as hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart disease. The opportunity to intervene and make an impact on major problems such as mental health is discussed. Future innovations will be required to address emerging trends in medicine such as transgender care and disparities in access and quality of care identified for testis, prostate, and other urological cancers.
