Abstract
In Peru, as in many other countries around the world, light comedy attracts many thousands of viewers to local theaters, renewing the hope of local directors, producers and distributors in the national film industry. This chapter critically examines several diverse factors that have given rise to the success of this genre through an analysis of some of the most popular romantic comedies in the country’s recent history: Un día sin sexo [A Day Without Sex] (2005), Ella y él [About Them] (2015), Locos de amor [Crazy in Love] (2016) and Locos de amor 2 [Crazy in Love 2] (2018), all directed by Frank Pérez-Garland. This study thus evaluates and underscores the ways that these films contribute to the shaping of Peru’s national socio-cultural film landscape.
At the time this book is going to print, grave accusations against Frank Pérez-Garland have been made public and confirmed by the filmmaker. The author of this chapter, which was written between 2018 and 2019, and the volume’s editors do not in any way condone Pérez-Garland’s actions.
