Abstract

Mental health problems are pervasive and challenging to treat effectively at both the individual and at the societal level. Searches were made of the published and gray literature for pharmacist interventions specific for mental health problems and for the components of care such as medication adherence. Pharmacists support mental health through their expertise with medicines and through their contributions to public health. Evidence drawn from systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggests that some pharmacist interventions produce a small but potentially useful benefit. However, the evidence is neither substantial nor robust. Nevertheless, pharmacists’ interventions are similar in their effectiveness and in the quality of the evidence to other reviews of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions concerning mental health. Collaborative, coordinated multidisciplinary care is needed along with systems changes to enable the development and delivery of mental health services that enable pharmacists to work to the full extent of their scope of practice.
