Pediatric Vascular Anomalies: Opportunities in Primary Care

Benign Hematologic Disorders in Children

Abstract

Vascular anomalies in children have diverse presentations, exhibit variable patterns of growth and regression, and can develop complications including coagulopathy, disfigurement, and functional impairment. An emerging understanding of the biological basis of different vascular lesions provides opportunities for effective treatment. The goal of this chapter is to familiarize the primary care practitioner with selected, more frequently encountered pediatric vascular anomalies, emphasizing their clinical presentation and natural history. Specific attention is paid to the most common vascular tumor, infantile hemangioma, which can be diagnosed and often managed by the primary pediatric clinician. We then explore opportunities for recognition, imaging, and conservative management of other specific vascular anomalies found in children and discuss indications for referral to subspecialists.
