Chronic Cough During Gastro-oesophageal Reflux

Abstract

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is among the commonest causes of chronic cough. Reflux cough is generally non-productive but, in a minority of cases, abundant bronchial secretion may occur. Patients often complain of both typical and atypical oesophageal symptoms. Several clinical and instrumental methods may help clinicians to establish a causative relationship between coughing and reflux episodes, although a precise diagnosis can be established only if coughing disappears following an adequate treatment of the gastro-oesophageal dysfunction. To this end, different types of drugs aimed at controlling gastrointestinal motility and acid production are available. Surgical therapy of reflux remains a viable possibility in selected cases.
