Abstract

Many historians of science who have written on biography are themselves biographers with direct experience of the advantages and difficulties presented by this genre. Thomas Hankins, who arguably began a historiographic discussion of the role of biography in the history of science with an essay entitled “In Defense of Biography,” noted that: “The biographer of a scientist tends to be drawn either to the personal life of his subject or to the technical details of his subject’s scientific work.
