Thoracic Surgery for the Acute Care Surgeon

Abstract

Injury to the thorax is present following both blunt and penetrating trauma and is the major contributing factor in approximately 75% of trauma mortality (Meredith and Hoth, Surg Clin North Am 87(1):95–118, 2007). The following chapter outlines the workup and management of the acutely injured lung, organized by mechanism. Herein, we discuss considerations and variables that enter into the decision-making process and describe various scenarios in which they are applicable.
