Abstract
The introduction establishes the book’s focus on memory and intermediality in contemporary artists’ moving image. It gives an overview of the frameworks of memory culture that inform the discussion of these practices in the 1990s and 2000s. Intermediality is defined as a dynamic and evolving set of relationships between media and their cultural associations. The currency of the term ‘moving image’ is examined in relation to the previous histories of artists’ film and video and the economy and distribution of moving image artworks. An overview of the book’s chapters identifies five overlapping mnemonic modes based on individual artist’s moving image practices: ‘critical nostalgia’, ‘database narrative’, ‘the echo-chamber’, ‘documentary fiction’ and ‘mediatized memories’.
