Abstract
The number of people who decide to undergo aesthetic surgery and minimally invasive procedures is constantly increasing proving that cosmetic medicine is a recession-proof industry. Even though people have tried to enhance their beauty since the ancient times, the breakthrough of cosmetic medicine came in the early twentieth century with the introduction of safe products and antiseptic surgical techniques. Current beauty standards are widely promoted by mass media, and they are usually associated with success in professional life and interpersonal relationships. The popularity of social media has launched a new era, as even more people tend to show off a better version of themselves using smartphone applications. Some cosmetic patients present edited photos of themselves requesting similar interventions. Physicians need to be aware of the motivational factors of modern cosmetic patients so as to identify and exclude those with unrealistic expectations who may not benefit significantly from the cosmetic procedure.
